Mobile Telecommunications signs $30 million contracts with Motorola to
expand in Middle East, Africa
Sunday, 17 July 2005
Kuwait's
Mobile Telecommunications Company Group (MTC) has signed contracts with
Motorola in Middle East and Africa worth more than $30 million as part
of a network expansion initiative. MTC will deploy solutions to boost the
capacity, availability and voice quality of its network in Kuwait, while
enabling 2.5G expansion capabilities for its more than 1.5 million subscribers.
MTC will now be among the first telecom operators in the Middle East to
deploy Motorola’s Adaptive Multi Rate (AMR) solution. The end-to-end AMR
offering is designed to improve voice quality across MTC’s entire network,
especially in more remote areas, at the edge of its coverage range, as
well as in buildings.
A significant element in the upgrade includes Motorola services and support
to ensure that MTC is fully optimizing its GSM and GPRS networks. These
solutions enable it to benchmark its network performance against that of
the world’s leading telecom operators, and improve its subscribers’ communication
experience by tweaking applications and enhancing network utilization.
As part of its upgrade initiative, MTC will deploy Motorola’s Network Support
Program (NSP). Using NSP, MTC can better focus on its core business issues
while managing network availability and helping to reduce subscriber churn
– a key consideration in Kuwait’s competitive mobile market.
MTC has also opted for Motorola’s GPRS network optimization service and
related value-added services.

"We offer our congratulations to the leadership of Kuwait, the Kuwait National
Assembly, and to the people of Kuwait on the passage today of full political
rights for Kuwaiti women," said State Department Spokesman Richard Boucher.
"The ability of women to play a full role in the political life of Kuwait
adds a welcome and necessary element to the vibrant and critical roles
they already play in numerous spheres of Kuwaiti society. We are confident

The amendment to the Kuwait's electoral law that franchises women by granting
them for the first time the right to vote and run for parliament was passed

women voters and candidates to abide by Islamic law. Council elections

Moody's
upgrades to D the financial strength rating of al Ahli Bank of Kuwait
Tuesday, 14 December
2004
Moody's
rating agency has upgraded to D with stable outlook from D- the financial
strength rating (FSR) of Al Ahli Bank of Kuwait (ABK). The A2/Prime-2 foreign
currency deposit ratings and their outlooks remain unchanged. ABK had consolidated
assets of $5.5 billion in September 2004.
Moody's said that this rating action reflects the continuing improvement
in the bank's financial fundamentals and risk profile, underscored by significant
reductions in problem loans, greatly enhanced coverage by loan-loss reserves,
as well as sustained reductions in the level of related-party exposures.
ABK's high capital ratios support further growth opportunities and remain
at a level consistent with the bank's risk profile. The upgrade also reflects
the bank's improved efficiency stemming from investments in technology,
workforce rationalization and attention to costs.
Although ABK is one of the smaller of the Kuwaiti commercial banks, enhanced
emphasis on deposit gathering has improved the bank's deposit franchise,
while its growth focus remains the retail market. Despite the departure
of the bank's CEO in 2003, its capable and experienced management team
remains a positive factor.
However, the investors' service noted that the ABK continues to keep a
large proportion of low-yielding Government Debt Bonds on its books, which
reduce earnings and add pressure to scale the franchise. Given recent regulatory
changes in Kuwait, managing funding costs will remain a significant challenge
for the bank. Its D FSR could in future benefit from: the further diversification
of its franchise and revenue streams.
